Testing Your Car Battery

Replacing Your Car BatteryPro Muffler & Brake Shop Tech Question:
I’m David in Benton Harbor, Michigan. For the last year and a half I’ve had some battery problems. I had trouble starting my car so I bought a new battery. At first everything was fine, then about six months later I had problems starting my car again, so I got a new battery. Again, everything was fine for another five or six months then I had trouble starting my car again. I went to get another battery and the parts guy said why do you need another battery, weren’t you in a few months ago? So he tested my battery and it was OK. Apparently I’ve been replacing good batteries. What’s wrong?

Pro Muffler & Brake Shop Answer:
Look, we can’t fault David for not knowing what’s wrong – he just didn’t have enough key information. And frankly, neither do I.

First, he was right to suspect his battery. But if he had asked to have his auto battery tested when he first went to the auto parts store, he would have found out that his battery was still good and would have known he needed to take his car into a shop for further diagnosis.

There could be any number of reasons his car wouldn’t start. Unfortunately, he had a year and a half of unnecessary expense and inconvenience and still doesn’t know what’s wrong. When you find yourself in a situation like David, do yourself a favor and talk to a professional.

Disc Brake Maintenance

Today, we’re talking about disc brakes. Your vehicle weighs several thousand pounds and it takes a lot of force to bring it and your passengers to a safe stop – so everything needs to be in good working order. The wheel hub keeps your wheel attached to the auto. The brake disc – or rotor – is attached to the hub and spins with the wheel as you drive. Your brake pads clamp onto the rotor to slow the wheel. The brake caliper straddles the rotor and squeezes the rotor to slow it down. The calipers contain brake pads which rub on the rotor when you step on the brakes. The brake piston causes the calipers to squeeze and release as you use your brakes.

Disc Brake Pad Replacement Benton HarborYour auto brake pads start to wear the first time you step on the brakes. Eventually the pads are worn out and need to be replaced. If you don’t replace brake pads when they’re worn out, the metal parts of the brake will grind against the rotor and carve grooves into the surface. Continue reading

Cooling System Service

Your car or truck’s cooling system’s job is to keep your engine cool. Coolant (also called antifreeze) mixed with water flows through your engine and absorbs heat. The mixture then flows out to the radiator where it’s cooled by air flowing over the radiator. From there the cooled mix circulates back through the minivan engine to absorb more heat.

Auto Cooling SystemCoolant, or antifreeze, is specially formulated to keep your engine safe in a wide range of environmental and operating temperatures in Benton Harbor.

Without coolant, the minivan’s metal engine parts would expand so much that the engine would seize up and stop running.  Expensive parts could be broken or warp so badly they would have to be replaced at Pro Muffler & Brake Shop Inc.  It could even be so bad that the whole engine is ruined and has to be replaced.

Also, if it’s freezing outside, the water in your engine could freeze while your vehicle is sitting out in the MI cold. This is why you check coolant levels frequently and have your cooling system inspected for leaks. Also your manufacturer has a maintenance requirement for draining and replacing your coolant. These recommendations can vary widely, so check the owner’s manual or ask your service adviser.

The reason you need to change the coolant is that it has additives in it to protect the cooling system. As you can imagine, with all the heat, the cooling system’s a pretty harsh environment. The additives keep the fluid from becoming corrosive and damaging the radiator and other  cooling system components. Over time, the additives are depleted and the coolant just has to be replaced. A simple pH test can measure the coolant’s acidity.

You may have noticed that there are different colors of antifreeze at Pro Muffler & Brake Shop Inc: it is very important that you use the correct type.  The different coolant types are different colors so you don’t mix them up.  Manufacturers use different materials to make the cooling system, and they require different types of antifreeze to protect them.

So check with your knowledgeable Pro Muffler & Brake Shop Inc service adviser or owner’s manual for the right kind because using the wrong coolant can void the warranty for your minivan cooling system.

Car Scent Is Good For Southwestern Michigan Drivers?

Car Scent Is Good For MI Drivers? Here’s a Michigan travel tip that I’ll bet you didn’t know, and, it might keep you safer: The average American commuter spends two and a half hours daily in their car.

The government says a hundred thousand auto accidents yearly are caused by drivers who fall asleep at the wheel. Aggressive driving is the number-one traffic safety concern.

So what does this have to do with how your car smells?

Well, which scent did you think makes drivers more alert?

Is it:

A. Strawberry
B. New Car
C. Pine
D. Warm Vanilla Breeze

It’s C.  Drivers in Southwestern Michigan are more alert and have less fatigue with pine scent in the car, according to AroMetrics.

And, Michigan drivers were less angry with overall improved driving performance with strawberry and pine scents.

And you thought they just smelled nice.

At Pro Muffler & Brake Shop Inc, we install quality NAPA replacement parts. Give us a call at 269.926.2006.
